Korfball is a fast-paced, fun, and inclusive team sport that is designed to be played by both men and women together on equal terms. Originally developed in the Netherlands in 1902, korfball has since grown into a globally recognised sport played in over 70 countries — with thriving leagues, university clubs, and international competitions.
Whether you’re new to team sports or an experienced athlete looking for something different, korfball offers a unique blend of teamwork, strategy, and skill, all in a highly social and welcoming environment.
The Core Concept
At its heart, korfball is a mixed-gender sport where teams of eight players (four male and four female) compete to score points by throwing a ball through a basket — called a korf — mounted on a 3.5-metre-high post.
But unlike other ball sports, korfball places a strong emphasis on teamwork, equality, and intelligent play. Because of the rules around contact and movement, players must rely on positioning, passing, and communication rather than physical strength or individual dominance. This makes korfball incredibly inclusive, tactical, and enjoyable at all levels.
Key Rules and How It Works
Here’s a quick breakdown of the main features of the game:
- Teams: 8 players per side — 4 male and 4 female
- Court: The pitch is divided into two halves (called zones): attack and defence
- Positions: Each player has a zone-specific role and switches ends every two goals
- Objective: Throw the ball through the opponent’s korf to score a goal
- No dribbling or running with the ball: Players must pass to move it around
- No direct contact or tackling: Defence is played through positioning and interception
- Gender-matched marking: Male players defend male opponents; females defend females
This results in a dynamic, end-to-end style of play where everyone has a chance to contribute in both attack and defence.
Why Is Korfball Unique?
🟡 True Gender Equality
Korfball isn’t just mixed-gender by chance — it’s built into the rules. Every team must have an equal number of men and women on the court, and all players participate equally in attacking and defending. This makes it one of the most progressive and balanced team sports available.
🟡 Inclusive and Accessible
Because physical strength and height are not the most important factors, anyone can excel at korfball. It’s a sport that rewards agility, timing, spatial awareness, and smart decision-making. Players of all ages, fitness levels, and backgrounds are welcome.
🟡 Tactical and Fast-Paced
Korfball games are exciting and unpredictable. With constant movement, rotations between attack and defence, and the need for coordinated team strategies, every player is involved and no two games are ever the same.
